Release

On October 16, 2012, Victorious actress Elizabeth Gillies announced that pre-orders were available for Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show, the series' second and final extended play, stating that she had co-written one of the tracks and was excited for fans to hear it.[1][2] "You Don't Know Me" was officially released as the fourth track on Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show on November 6, 2012.[3][4][5] The track was then featured in a Victorious episode titled "Tori Fixes Beck and Jade", which aired on December 1, 2012.[6][7] In the episode, Beck (Avan Jogia) thinks about asking another girl on a date but is afraid about how his ex, Jade (Gillies), will react.[6] To distract Jade, Tori (Victoria Justice) and Andre (Leon Thomas III) try to help her get a date. The episode ends with Jade performing "You Don't Know Me" and getting back together with Beck.[6][8]

Music and lyrics

Gillies provides the lead vocals for "You Don't Know Me" and is credited as a writer on the track,[2] with additional songwriting by Sam Bisbee and Jason Levine. Production was handled by Today Kid and Sy Rhys Kaye, with Today Kid also handling engineering and programming. The track was mastered by Stephen Marcussen and mixed by Miles Walker, with Eric Bisgyer serving as assistant engineer.[3]

In a November 2012 interview with J-14 magazine, Gillies explained that she wrote the song when the first season of Victorious finished filming in late 2011. She stated that she wrote it from Jade's viewpoint and later sent it to Victorious creator Dan Schneider. Schneider told her he liked the song and later surprised her by deciding to use it in the show's final season.[7] Musically, "You Don't Know Me" is a pop and rock ballad.[9][10]

Reception

Wendy Michaels for Cambio commended the track, stating that "we can't wait to hear it".[2] Geo News called the song a "hit".[11] Jack Irvin of People magazine described "You Don't Know Me" as "memorable",[9] while Helen A. Lee of the entertainment website Looper called it a "spot-on anthem".[8] In a separate review for Looper, Xandra Harbet praised "You Don’t Know Me", stating that the show had "very few" songs without Justice and that it "could have used many more of them".[10] In May 2023, American singer Charlotte Lawrence told Hunger magazine that she enjoyed the song, saying she "shamelessly listen[s] to [it] semi-frequently".[12] Commercially, "You Don't Know Me" peaked at number 16 on the US Billboard Kid Digital Song Sales chart.[13]
