"Faster Than Boyz" is a song by the Victorious cast featuring American actress and singer Victoria Justice. The track was officially released on Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show, the show's second and final extended play on November 6, 2012. The song also appeared in a Victorious episode titled "The Bad Roommate". The track was written by Justice and Kool Kojak, with the latter solely handling production. "Faster Than Boyz" peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Kid Digital Song Sales chart. Justice performed the song live throughout 2012.
Background and release
In September 2012, Victorious actress Victoria Justice revealed that she had recorded "Faster Than Boyz" and expressed excitement for fans to hear it.[1] In an interview that same month, she described the song as "fun" and noted that it would appear in a future episode of the series.[2] "Faster Than Boyz" was later released on November 6, 2012, as the fifth and final song on Victorious 3.0: Even More Music from the Hit TV Show, the show's second and final extended play.[3][4][5] The track was later featured in the Victorious episode "The Bad Roommate," which aired on January 5, 2013.[6][7] In the episode, Andre (Leon Thomas III) gets tired of living with his grandmother and moves in with Tori (Justice).[6][7] While working together on a song for a class assignment, they discover they cannot get along as roommates and decide to write about it.[6][7] The episode concludes with the two performing "Faster Than Boyz".[6][7]
Music and lyrics
"Faster Than Boyz" features lead vocals from Justice, who also co-wrote the track.[8] Additional songwriting, production, and engineering were handled by Kool Kojak. Stephen Marcussen served as the mastering engineer, with Miles Walker as the mixing engineer and Eric Bisgyer as assistant engineer.[3] During different interviews, Justice stated that "Faster than Boyz" is "about that guy who thinks he's so cool" and a "certain type of guy who I'm not really interested in".[2][9] Writing for The Express-Times, Precious Petty stated that the track is a "song about leaving behind unworthy love interests".[10]
Reception and live performances
To promote the song, Justice performed "Faster Than Boyz" live at the Pacific Amphitheatre in California in August 2012.[11] She performed it live the 2012 Great Allentown Fair.[10] She also sang it live during the 2012 Allegan County Fair in Allegan, Michigan.[9]
The staff of ClevverTV described "Faster Than Boyz" as one of the extended play's "stand-out tracks".[12] Amy Sciarretto of PopCrush praised "Faster Than Boyz", stating that it is a "track you definitely want to check out".[13] Crystal Bell, writing for Celebuzz, called the track an "anthem", labeling it as "one amazing song".[7] Janice Page of The Boston Globe opined that Justice "feels like a woman on the move".[8] Mark Wedel for the Kalamazoo Gazette wrote that the song has "positive lyrics for strong young women".[9] Commercially, "Faster Than Boyz" charted at number eight on the Billboard Kid Digital Song Sales chart in the United States.[14]
