Record TV Africa is a pan-African television channel owned and operated by Record Media Group PLC, aimed at Portuguese-speaking and other African audiences. Originally launched under the name TV Record Angola, it was rebranded as Record TV Africa in late 2016 to reflect its broader continental reach and programming scope.
History
Record TV began operations in Angola prior to 2009 under the name TV Record Angola. On 24 November 2016, following a network-wide rebranding initiative, the channel adopted the name Record TV Africa.[1]
Programming
Following the rebranding, the channel expanded its programming slate to include:
- JR África, a nightly news programme launched on 8 May 2018, presented by Simeão Mundula.[2]
- Entertainment and magazine-style shows, such as Tudo a Ver (premiered 18 March 2019).[3]
- Lifestyle, culture, and fashion segments, including the premiere of Escola da Moda in 2015.[4]
Regulatory challenges
Record TV Africa faced operational suspension in Angola in April 2021 due to non-compliance with governmental accreditation requirements — specifically, lacking Angolan nationals in executive roles and employing unaccredited foreign journalists. The suspension was announced by Angola’s Secretary of State for Social Communication on 19 April 2021, with effect from 21 April 2021.[5] The channel later resumed limited broadcasting via cable services in August 2021.[6]
Relationship with sister channels
Record TV Africa is part of the Record Media Group network, which includes:
- Record TV Kenya (launched 2006, Nairobi-based, still operational).
- RecordTV Uganda (operated 2006–2021; ceased due to financial issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic).
- Record News (English) (a digital news platform launched in 2025, operating from Nairobi).
