Modern pentathlon at the 1987 Pan American Games was held on August 9 and 10, 1987, in Indianapolis, United States, as part of the X Pan American Games. The competition featured the traditional five-discipline format—fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting, and cross‑country running—conducted across multiple venues including the Indiana University Natatorium, Convention Center, Hoosier Horse Park, and Camp Atterbury. Only men's individual and team events were contested, with medals awarded accordingly. This edition continued the sport’s presence in the Pan American programme following its return in 1983. It acted as a regional benchmark ahead of the 1988 Summer Olympics, showcasing leading pentathletes from across the Americas.
