İlyas Çanakçı (born 7 September 2001) is a Turkish sprinter who specializes in the 400 metres. He was a member of Turkey's gold medal-winning 4 × 400 m relay team at the 2021 Summer World University Games in Chengdu.
Career
Çanakçı made his international debut in 2018 at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Győr, placing fifth in the 400 metres in 47.45 seconds and winning a silver medal in the 1000-metre Swedish relay (1:53.84).[1] Later that year, he competed in the 4 × 400 m relay at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, though the team did not reach the final. He also placed fourth at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.
In 2019, Çanakçı finished sixth in the 400 metres at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Borås (46.48) and helped Turkey win gold in the 4 × 400 m relay (3:08.34). He was also part of the Turkish team that won the 4 × 400 m relay at the Balkan Championships in Pravets and Cluj-Napoca in 2019 and 2020.[2]
He won the 2021 Balkan Indoor Championships 400 metres (46.91) in Istanbul,[3] and also set a new national indoor best in the 300 metres (33.22). At the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, he reached the semi-finals (47.60). In the 2021 World Athletics Relays in Chorzów, Turkey did not reach the 4 × 400 m relay final.
He ran at the 2021 European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn with the relay team, finishing fourth (3:06.57).
In 2022, Çanakçı won the Balkan Indoor Championships 400 metres (46.58) and bronze in the relay.In 2023, he earned silver with the men's relay at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Espoo (3:03.04). At the 2021 Summer World University Games in Chengdu (held in 2023), Çanakçı and the Turkish team won gold in the 4 × 400 m relay (3:03.46).[4]
He has also been a multiple-time Turkish national champion in both the 200 m and 400 m events.[5]
