Züleyha Tan Yıldız (born 1968) is a Turkish former taekwondo athlete who achieved significant success at international competitions in the featherweight (55 kg) category.
Career
Tan won the gold medal at the 1986 European Taekwondo Championships held in Seefeld, Austria.[1] Her achievements in 1986 led to her being nominated for the Milliyet Sports Awards as Athlete of the Year.
She claimed a bronze medal at the 1987 World Taekwondo Championships in Barcelona, Spain, marking one of Turkey's early international medals in women's taekwondo.
In 1988, Tan defended her European title, winning another gold at the 1988 European Taekwondo Championships in Ankara, Turkey.[2] That same year, she represented Turkey at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, where taekwondo was included as a demonstration sport for the first time. Tan became the first Turkish female taekwondo athlete to compete at the Olympics. Competing in the featherweight category, she reached the final and finished second.[3]
Personal life
Yıldız comes from a family of taekwondo athletes. She married former taekwondo competitor Fahrettin Yıldız in 1989, who later became a coach for the Turkish national teams.[4] Their son, Muhammed Emin Yıldız, won a silver medal at the 2018 European Taekwondo Championships.[5] Her sister, Arzu Tan Sayan, is a world champion, and her brother-in-law, Yavuz Sayan, is a European champion in taekwondo.[6]
