Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş (born 3 June 2011)[1] is a Turkish chess prodigy and grandmaster. He was awarded the International Master title prior to turning 12, becoming the youngest individual from Turkey to achieve this title.[2] In 2024 he became the fourth-youngest grandmaster in history, and later that year he became the youngest player ever to reach a rating of 2600. As of July 2025, Erdoğmuş is the youngest grandmaster in the world.[3]
Early life
Erdoğmuş was born in Bursa, Turkey.[4] Introduced to chess by his kindergarten teacher, he started playing the game at the age of 6.[5]
Chess career
In 2018, Erdoğmuş won the age 8 category at the 6th Cesme International Open Chess Tournament 2018, and in the 2019 Turkey Youth Chess Championship for the same age group.[1] He won the U-8 European Chess Championship in 2019, winning 8 out of 8 games, guaranteeing the championship as he entered the last round.[6][7]
He attained the IM title during the 3rd FIDE Council in 2022, following a commendable performance at the Svetozar Gligoric Memorial Chess Tournament in Serbia.[8][9] Also in 2022, Erdoğmuş won the ChessKid Youth Speed Chess Championship online tournament.[10]
Erdoğmuş participated in advanced training and competitions in 2023, including the Chessable FIDE Camp in Spain and the 2023 European Individual Chess Championship in Serbia.[10][11]
In December 2023, at the Sunway Sitges tournament Erdoğmuş ranked 9th with 7.5/10.[12]
In April 2024, at the Grenke Chess Open and Classic, he became the fourth-youngest Grandmaster of all time.[13]
In May 2024, Erdoğmuş broke GM Judit Polgár's 35-year-old record as the highest-rated player before the age of 13 by reaching a rating of 2569[14] (while Polgar remained the highest-ranked 12-year-old at 56th[15])
In July 2024, he won both under 13 and under 16 ChessKid Youth Championship tournaments.[16]
In October 2024 he became the youngest player ever to achieve a 2600 rating, at the age of 13 years, 3 months and 28 days, beating the previous record by nearly a year.[17]
In May 2025, he tied at second place with Nils Grandelius in the TePe Sigeman & Co chess tournament.[18]
In July 2025, he faced Peter Svidler in 'Clash of Generations', a match series of six classical games and twevlve blitz games. He won the classical section by 4–2 including three victories, but lost in the blitz section by 2–10.[19] This helped him to reach the Top 100 in classical rating at the age of 14, making him the second-youngest player in history to make it into the Top 100, behind Judit Polgar who made it at the age of 12.[20]
