Yılmaz Helvacıoğlu (born 1961 in Düzce, Turkey) is a Turkish former taekwondo practitioner and coach. He won the gold medal at the 1983 World Taekwondo Championships, becoming Turkey's first world champion in the sport.[1]
Career
Yılmaz Helvacıoğlu was born in 1961 in Düzce, Turkey. During his childhood, he moved with his family to Germany where he began practicing taekwondo in 1974. He competed in various junior categories and was invited to join the German national team between 1978 and 1980. In 1980, he represented Turkey at the European Taekwondo Championships, marking his first international competition.[1]
After the establishment of taekwondo as an independent federation in Turkey, Helvacıoğlu aimed to win a world championship title. In 1983, at the World Taekwondo Championships held in Copenhagen, Denmark, he defeated opponents from Jordan, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden, and South Korea to reach the final, where he won gold against a British competitor with a score of 5–0. This victory made him Turkey's first world taekwondo champion.[1][2]
In 1982, Helvacıoğlu served as both captain and coach of the Turkish national team. Following some disagreements, he ended his active competitive career and returned to Germany, where he began coaching at his own club. He has trained many successful athletes and continues to coach at his sports facility in Germany.[1]
