West Pontianak

West Pontianak (Pontianak Barat in Indonesian) is a district (Indonesian:kecamatan) in Pontianak in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Covering an area of 16.82 km2 (6.49 sq mi) across four kelurahan (sub-districts)–Pal Lima, Sungai Jawi Dalam, Sungai Jawi Luar, and Sungai Beliung, it had a population of 151,732 residents in 2024.

Geography

West Pontianak district is located in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Covering an area of 16.82 km2 (6.49 sq mi), it is sub-divided into four kelurahan (sub-districts)–Pal Lima, Sungai Jawi Dalam, Sungai Jawi Luar, and Sungai Beliung.[1] It lies on the south bank of the Kapuas Besar River, the longest river in Indonesia. It forms part of Pontianak, the seat and largest city of Kalimantan.[2] The territory consists of low-lying urban terrain, which is prone to flooding during heavy rains.[3]

Demographics

The district had a population of 151,732 as per the 2024 estimates.[1] Pontianak has a multi-ethnic diversity composed of Melayu, Chinese, and locals.[4] The district is a commercial and residential hub, with agriculture, manufacturing, trade, and services as key sectors.[1] Majority of the population along the river, live in traditional Malay-style houses are built on stilts along the riverbanks, adapted to local river depth conditions and engaged in fishing.[3] The district is well connected by road, and has dedicated river routes.[5]
