Vitaly Shchur began training in Greco-Roman wrestling under the influence of his father, who was a former sambo practitioner. Although he had limited success as a youth, his performances improved significantly after transitioning to senior-level competitions.
Shchur made his debut at the Russian national championships in the early 2010s and gradually established himself as a contender in the heavyweight category. In 2014, he won his first national medal, a bronze at the Russian Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships. He continued his domestic success with further podium finishes in subsequent years, winning silver medals in 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023, and another bronze in 2020. His only national title came in 2019, when he won gold in the 130 kg division.[1]
Internationally, Shchur represented Russia at the 2017 European Wrestling Championships in Novi Sad, where he won a bronze medal in the 130 kg weight class. The following year, at the 2018 European Wrestling Championships held in Kaspiysk, he reached the final and claimed a silver medal, losing to Olympic champion Riza Kayaalp.[2]
Shchur has trained in Novoaltaysk and represents both Kemerovo Oblast and Altai Krai at domestic competitions. His personal coach is Vladimir Kutcher, a Merited Coach of Russia.[3]
Shchur started Greco-Roman wrestling under the guidance of his father. He represents Kemerovo Oblast and Altai Krai, and has been a member of the Russian national team since 2014.[4]
