Tsugumasa Muraoka (Japanese: 村岡 嗣政, Hepburn: Muraoka Tsugumasa; born December 7, 1972) is a Japanese politician and the current governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan. He become the second youngest governor in Japan when he was first elected in 2014. He was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.[1] He previously served as the director of the Financial Division of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for Hiroshima City and Kochi Prefecture.
Biography
Muraoka was born on December 7, 1972, in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. He attended Ube City Nishigiwa Elementary School and Nishigiwa Middle School. He also graduated from Yamaguchi Prefectural Ube High School. While in high school, he founded a band inspired by the American singer Prince. He became the president of the student council in his second year in high school.[2][3] He graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics. In April 1996, he joined the Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications). He became the director of the Finance Division in Hiroshima City in August 2002 and later on Kochi Prefecture in April 2007.[4][2] He worked in the agency until he retired on January 15, 2014.[4] Shigetarō Yamamoto resigned as governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture on January 14, 2014. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Yamaguchi Prefectural Federation picked Muraoka to run in the election that will be held in February.[5] He announced his candidacy on January 20 in a press conference.[3] He won the election receiving 286,996, beating the Tsutomu Takamura and Naoko Fujii, and he also became the second youngest governor in Japan after Eikei Suzuki of Mie Prefecture.[6][7] On July 27, 2017, he announced that he will be running for reelection in the 2018 Yamaguchi gubernatorial election, he also announced that he will be joining the Liberal Democratic Party.[8] He was reelected for his second term in 2018, beating Yuzuru Kumano.[9] He was reelected for the third time on the 2022 Yamaguchi gubernatorial election.[10]
