"Tingin" (lit.'Look') is a single by Filipino band Cup of Joe from their extended play (EP) Patutunguhan (transl. Destination) (2023). Written by Raphaell Ridao, Gian Bernardino, Vixen Gareza, Redentor Ridao (brother of Raphaell) and Janine Teñoso who also featured the song. According to Teñoso, the song expresses the feeling of being captivated by someone's presence, where every moment shared is cherished and marked by the light they bring into each other's lives. It was released on April 28, 2023, through Viva Records.

The song achieved strong streaming performance and debuted at number 25 on the Billboard Philippines Songs chart on October 27, 2023, marking both its first week on the chart and its peak position. Its entry contributed to a new milestone, with 17 Filipino acts charting simultaneously, breaking the previous record for the most local artists appearing on the chart at once.[1] As of November 2023, the song had surpassed 22 million streams on Spotify. It also became the top-performing song by an OPM band on several Spotify editorial playlists in the Philippines.[2]

Background and release

After signing with Viva Records in mid-2019, Cup of Joe began production on their debut extended play (EP) Patutunguhan (transl. Destination), which was featured on Billboard Philippines' list of top albums and EPs of 2023.[3] The EP includes a mix of new and previously released songs, such as "Patutunguhan" (2023) and "Wag Na Lang" (2023), along with earlier singles like "Tataya" (2023), "Estranghero" (2022), and "Mananatili" (2022).[4] The band described "light" as the central theme of the extended play,[5] Patutunguhan Live Manila, held at Viva Cafe in Quezon City in September 2023.[6]

Followed by the release "Tataya", the single "Tingin" was released on April 28, 2023, collaboration with Janine Teñoso and later included as the opening track of Cup of Joe's debut EP Patutunguhan, which came out on June 30.[1] Followed by her collaboration with Arthur Nery on "Pelikula" (lit.'Movie') was released in 2021, Teñoso became a "chartbreaker" with "Tingin", alongside with the band.[7]

Composition and lyrics

"Tingin" is a alternative pop[8] song featuring atmospheric and dreamy pop instrumentals[9] with a length of three minutes and forty-two seconds long. It was written by Raphaell Ridao, Gian Bernardino, Vixen Gareza, Redentor Ridao and Janine Teñoso.[10] In Billboard Philippines, stated that the lyrics depict the perspective of someone who, despite the chaos of the world around them, remains completely focused on the person they love, unaffected by any distractions.[11] The song was produced by Shadiel Chan.[10]

According to the band, the single has resonated with a wide audience, particularly among Generation Z listeners while also appealing to millennials, contributing to its mainstream success.[12] Reflecting on the experience, the band stated, "It's still surreal. While we're thrilled that so many people connect with our music, creating it is our artistic expression, not just about chasing hits. We pour our hearts and stories into the lyrics."[13]

The official music video for "Tingin" was released by Cup of Joe's YouTube channel on October 23, 2023.
