Thiago Caitano Romeiro Pantaleão (born September 5, 1997) is a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and dancer. His music blends R&B, pop, and Brazilian funk with lyrics addressing themes of self-acceptance, identity, and social issues including LGBTQ+ rights and anti-racism.[1][2]

Pantaleão gained attention through social media, particularly after his 2020 single "Tipo Iza" received support from established Brazilian artists including Iza and Liniker. The singer had a collaboration in 2021 titled "Te Deixo Crazy" featuring Danny Bond. In 2022, he signed with Som Livre and released his debut album Fim do Mundo, followed by the EP Nova Era Part. I in 2023 and the album Nova Era in 2024.[3][4]

Early life and background

Thiago Caitano Romeiro Pantaleão was born on September 5, 1997, in Vassouras, Rio de Janeiro, and raised in the Jardim Nova Era neighborhood of Paracambi in the state's metropolitan region.[1][5] He is the son of Bianca Pantaleão, a housekeeper and artisan, and a father who worked as a truck driver and church musician.[6]

Pantaleão's musical journey began in childhood when he started singing in his family's evangelical church, where his mother served as a vocalist and his father as a musician. According to the artist, his mother was his first "gospel diva," as he would accompany her singing on stage alongside his father.[6] During adolescence, Pantaleão identified as LGBTQ+ but faced significant social challenges, including losing most of his friendships when he came out. Although he never experienced direct conflict with the church regarding his sexual orientation, his personal acceptance proved difficult due to his conservative upbringing.[7] He eventually chose to leave the church in order to "live his truth."[6]

Before pursuing music professionally, Pantaleão worked as a commercial consultant at CNA Idiomas.[8]

Career

2020–2022: Career beginnings and Fim do Mundo

In 2020, Pantaleão launched his music career by releasing three singles, including "Tipo Iza," which gained attention from established Brazilian artists such as Liniker and Iza, who was referenced in the song's title.[9] Through social media, particularly Twitter, Iza shared words of encouragement and promoted his music video, while Liniker praised his musical style, harmony, and vocal ability.[9]

In 2021, Pantaleão released "Te Deixo Crazy" in collaboration with Danny Bond. The song achieved over 3 million streams across YouTube and Spotify within six months of release.[10]

In 2022, Pantaleão gained viral attention after sharing photos wearing a crocheted bikini created by his mother, inspired by a design worn by Jade Picon on Big Brother Brasil 22.[11] The viral moment led to his invitation to the Vogue Ball at Copacabana Palace.[12]

Following this success, Pantaleão signed with Som Livre record label on June 16, 2022, with artistic direction by Pablo Bispo, musical production by Ruxell and Gondim, and management by Liga Entretenimento.[13] He subsequently released the single "Desculpa por Eu Não Te Amar".

In September 2022, Pantaleão released his debut studio album Fim do Mundo, featuring nine tracks that blend pop and rock sounds with influences from superheroes, anime, and K-pop.[14] His first major television performance was on Música Boa Ao Vivo on Multishow, where he performed alongside established artists including Gloria Groove, Priscilla, and Grag Queen.[15]

2023–present: Nova Era and international recognition

In November 2023, Pantaleão released the EP Nova Era Part. I, featuring five tracks including four previously unreleased songs. The project served as the first installment of a larger artistic concept examining his past to understand his present identity as an artist.[16] The title Nova Era serves as both a reference to the Jardim Nova Era neighborhood where he was born and a symbolic representation of his artistic evolution.[5]

The project culminated on August 16, 2024, with the release of the complete album Nova Era, featuring 11 tracks total, including collaborations with Karol Conká on "Sai da Frente" and Luiz Lins on "Mano que Viagem."[17] The album explores sonically and aesthetically the Brazilian 1990s and 2000s, drawing from his experiences growing up in suburban Rio de Janeiro and incorporating elements of R&B, Brazilian funk, and pop.[18]

Pantaleão has performed at Brazilian music festivals, including Rock in Rio in both 2022 and 2024. His 2024 performance on September 14 at the Espaço Favela stage featured a 17-song setlist.[19]

In September 2024, Pantaleão posted a twerking video as his final post on X/Twitter before the blocking of the platform in Brazil. The video attracted attention from international artists including Lil Nas X and accumulated over 1 million views.[20]

Artistry and influences

Pantaleão's musical style incorporates contemporary R&B, pop, and Brazilian funk, blending modern production with Brazilian rhythms. His work draws from his suburban upbringing and Brazilian 2000s cultural references.[18] The Nova Era project explores themes of religious conflict, sexual identity, and suburban identity, using visual elements from sacred art and Brazilian family traditions.[18]

His musical influences include Rihanna, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, and Lil Nas X, as well as Brazilian artists including Gloria Groove, Liniker, Luedji Luna, and Ludmilla.[2]

Personal life

In a 2023 interview with UOL, Pantaleão publicly identified as bisexual, to acknowledge his attraction to people of multiple genders.[21] Since 2023, he has been in a relationship with Miran, one of his dancers and choreographers, and has described their arrangement as an open relationship.[22]
