Themelios (Greek: Θεμέλιος, i.e., foundation or keystone) is a peer-reviewed international evangelical theological journal that expounds on the historic Christian faith. Its primary audience is theological students, pastors and scholars. It was formerly a print journal operated by RTSF/UCCF in the UK, and it became a digital journal operated by The Gospel Coalition in 2008. Also previously it was known as the Theological Students Fellowship (TSF) Bulletin from 1951 to 1957.[1][2] While published in the United States, the writers are from many countries around the globe. Themelios works with Logos Bible Software in its publishing.[1]
Accusations of Fraud and Sectarian Bias
Anglican Watch published an article accusing Themelios's editors of three issues: (1) broken commitments to contributors; (2) "bogus reasons given that no serious academic would propose"; and (3) "fraud on the academic community by holding up a publication as 'peer-reviewed journal' that is really an editor-curated magazine".[3] Likewise, The Dissenter accused Themelios of "Stolen Academic Valor" by portraying itself as "peer reviewed" when the expert reviewers were overruled by the editors, resulting in articles accepted by the expert reviewers being rejected by the editors and vice versa. A board member reportedly admitted, “Brian Tabb has sometimes published essays which I rated poorly.” The article also accused new managing editor J. V. Fesko of an anti-Baptist bias.[4] Baptist News Global elaborated on the charge of an anti-baptist bias, documenting Fesko's ridicule of Baptists and his suppression of articles by Baptists that expose his Presbyterian tradition. The articles suggested that TGC's flagship journal is becoming a narrowly sectarian magazine. On August 18, 2025, Themelios announced the addition of two new editorial board members: Greg Lanier and N. Gray Sutanto, both faculty members at conservative, Presbyterian seminaries.[5]
