The Sun Rises on Us All (Chinese: 日掛中天, romanizedRì guà zhōng tiān) is an upcoming Chinese drama film directed by Cai Shangjun, co-written by Nianjin Han and Shangjun. It follows Meiyun (Xin Zhilei) and Baoshu (Zhang Songwen), a former couple, who meet again years after their separation.

The film will have its world premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on 5 September 2025, where it was nominated for he Golden Lion.

Plot

Former lovers Baoshu and Meiyun have estranged after an accident. Seven years later, the man and woman meet again and are confronted with long-forgotten secrets from their past.[1][2]

Cai Shangjun (2008)

The Sun Rises on Us All is the fourth feature film by Chinese director Cai Shangjun. He co-wrote the screenplay with Nianjin Han. Chinese actors Xin Zhilei and Zhang Songwen were cast in the main roles of the lovers Baoshu and Meiyun.[3] The cast also included actor Feng Shaofeng.[4]

Filming took place in the southeastern province of Guangdong on the South China Sea. The cities of Guangzhou, Shaoguan and Dongguan served as filming locations, among others.[1] Kim Hyun-seok of South Korea served as cinematographer. Frenchman Matthieu Laclau and Taiwanese Yann-Shan Tsai were responsible for editing.[2]

Release

The Sun Rises on Us All was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival,[5] where it is set to have its world premiere on 5 September 2025.[4] It is Cai Shangjun's second invitation to the competition following his film People Mountain People Sea in 2011.

It wil also be screened in the Centrepiece section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.[6]
