Production
In 2024, lead actor Takeru Satoh, who is listed as a co-executive producer, commented on his intent to produce the project saying:[1]
The advent of Netflix and the global popularity of Korean dramas led me to aspire for Japanese live-action productions to achieve similar worldwide adoration, which then became my definite goal. The live-action adaptation of Glass Heart represents the initial stride in realizing that ambition.
Casting
Lead actress Yu Miyazaki was cast after a series of auditions attended by Satoh. She learned how to play the drums for two years and did not have a body double during filming.[9] For the rest of the cast, they learned learned how to play instruments as well as singing for over a year and debuted as an actual band.[10]
Music
Glass Heart's original score was composed by Masakatsu Takagi.[10] Radwimps frontman Yojiro Noda and music producer Yaffle provided original songs for the series with the former writing the lyrics for the song "Senritsu to Kesshou" or "Crystalline Echo".[11] Musicians Taka of One Ok Rock, Yohei Kawakami of Alexandros, Ryujin Kiyoshi, TeddyLoid, and Tanaka also contributed, as well as vocalists Zarame and Ao.[10]
The series features original songs performed by the fictional band TENBLANK. An album by the band was released on digital on July 31, 2025, and a two-disc physical album was released a day later.[12][13]
Reception
On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of five critics gave the film a positive review.[14] Common Sense Media's Weiting Liu wrote: "Glass Heart is glossy and kinetic, with earnest actors embodying equally earnest characters. You can sense the cast's genuine belief in the script".[15] The critic James Hanfeld of The Japan Times gave a score of two out of five and described the series as a "flashy rock fairytale scrubbed of grit" but praised the performances of the cast.[16]
The series ranked eight in Netflix's Global Rankings (Non-English) for the week of August 4 to 10, 2025.[17] In the second week of August 2025, TENBLANK's "Crystalline Echo" ranked first in Spotify Japan's "Viral 50".[18]
