Royal Consort Sug-ui of the Geochang Shin clan (Korean숙의 신씨; Hanja淑儀 愼氏; 1436–1476) was a concubine of Crown Prince Yi Jang, the eldest son of King Sejo of Joseon.[1]

Biography

The future Royal Consort Sug-ui was born in 1436 as the eldest daughter and child of Shin Seon-gyeong and Lady Han of the Cheongju Han clan. She had five younger siblings; three sisters and two brothers.

Through her maternal grandfather, she was a second cousin to Han Myŏnghoe, and second cousins once removed to Queen Jangsun and Queen Gonghye as they shared Han Su (한수; 韓脩; 1333–1384) as their great-great-grandfather.

On August 23, 1456 (lunar calendar), she along with Lady Kwŏn of the Andong Kwŏn clan and Lady Yun of the Haepyeong Yun clan were selected to become the concubines of Crown Prince Uigyeong and were granted the title Consort So-hun (junior 5th rank concubine of the Crown Prince; 소훈, 昭訓).[2] She entered the palace that same year with the two women.[3]

In 1457, the Crown Prince passed away and left no issue with the consort.

When her husband was honored as King, Lady Shin was promoted to the 2nd junior rank concubine of the King (숙의; 淑儀) as Royal Consort Sug-ui in 1470 when King Seongjong ascended the throne. Whereas Lady Gwon and Lady Yun were promoted to the 1st junior rank concubine as Royal Consort Gwi-in (귀인; 貴人) in 1483 during King Seongjong’s reign.

She died on May 16, 1476 (lunar calendar), during the 7th year of King Seongjong's reign.
