Sofia Beatrice Barclay (born 31 August 1988) is an English actress.
Early life
Sofia Beatrice Barclay (born 31 August 1988) is an English actress, writer, and comedian. She is best known for her roles as Dr O’Sullivan in the Emmy-winning comedy series Ted Lasso, Suzy Ray in the romantic comedy Love Again, and the voice of Malala Windsor/Spider-UK in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Her stage work includes productions at the National Theatre and the Old Vic, and she is set to star as DS Barbara Havers in the upcoming BBC One /BritBox.[1] crime drama Lynley. Of Indian and English heritage, Barclay also writes for screen and stage. She is the granddaughter of Sir David Barclay.[2] and second cousin to Frederick Lubin.
Barclay was born in London, England. She is of mixed Indian and English heritage. She was educated at Westminster https://www.westminster.org.uk/[3] School and later trained at Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City.
Career
Initially credited as Sofia Stuart, Barclay began her career in theatre.[4] She played Desmonda in the 2012 Jack Studio Brockley production of Othello[5] and went on the 2014 tour with The Two Worlds of Charlie F. She had further theatre roles as Anna in Future Conditional at the Old Vic in 2015 and Nathalie in Mosquitoes at the National Theatre in 2017.[6]
In 2018 and 2019, Barclay played Selina in the BBC Two legal sitcom Defending the Guilty[7] and Alisha in the Hampstead Theatre production of Everyday I Make Greatness Happen,[8] had a small role in the film In Darkness, and was cast as Adela Zal in a pilot for a potential NYPD Blue spin-off series on ABC.[9] She then appeared in Julian Jarrold's Sulphur and White.[10]
Barclay had recurring roles as Zarina in the 2021 Channel 4 sitcom We Are Lady Parts[11] and Dr Sullivan, Roy Kent's (Brett Goldstein) sister in the second and third seasons of the Apple TV+ sports comedy Ted Lasso.[12] She originated the role of Maya in The Collaboration at the Young Vic in 2022.[13] The following year, she played Suzy Ray in the romantic comedy Love Again[14] and voiced Malala Windsor (Spider-UK) for the Marvel animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.[15]
In July 2024, it was announced Barclay would star opposite Leo Suter in a Lynley revival for BBC One and BritBox.[1] She also played Safiya Zamil in the Apple TV+ thriller Prime Target.

Barclay began her career on stage, earning critical acclaim for her portrayal of Desdemona in Othello at the Brockley Jack Studio Theatre. WhatsOnStage [16]described her performance as “a delight to watch,” praising her “lively, innocent, trusting” interpretation of the role. The British Theatre Guide[17] noted that she “stands apart” whilst OneStopArts[18] called her Desdemona “assured and heartbreakingly optimistic.”
She went on to appear in Future Conditional at the Old Vic Theatre directed by Matthew Warchus. [19] At The National she performed as Nathalie in Mosquitoes by Lucy Kirkwood directed by Rufus Norris. [20] At The Hampstead Theatre, she played Alisha in Every Day I Make Greatness Happen. [21]
In 2022, Barclay originated the role of Maya in The Collaboration at the Young Vic, performing opposite Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope and directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah. [22]
