Rayya is a city and municipality in Amritsar district in the Indian state of Punjab. Rayya is about 35 km from Amritsar and 45 km from Jalandhar. It is 5 km from the Beas River.
Parties like Indian National Congress Party have also been in power but not as frequently as the Shiromani Akali Dal Party.
Notable People
Several individuals from Rayya and nearby areas have played important roles in Punjab’s politics and administration:
- Jiwan Singh Umranangal – Politician of the Shiromani Akali Dal, served as Punjab’s Revenue Minister (1968) and Finance Minister (1977). He also held senior leadership positions within the party. [1]
- Paramraj Singh Umranangal – Indian Police Service officer (Punjab cadre, 1995 batch). He has served as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Punjab. [2]
- Gill family – Sant Singh Gill, who served as Member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, and his son Jasbir Singh Gill (also known as Dimpa), who was elected as a Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha (Khadoor Sahib) and earlier as an MLA from Beas. [3]
- Nahra family – Jathedar Joginder Singh Nahra, remembered as a freedom fighter, poet and Akali Dal leader, served as General Secretary and District President of the party. His son, Jathedar Jarnail Singh Nahra, was a member of the General Council and Chairman of Block Samiti Rayya.
- Manjinder Singh Kang – Former Member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly from Beas (2007), associated with Shiromani Akali Dal and a close political associate of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. [4]
- Santokh Singh Bhalaipur – Elected as MLA from Baba Bakala constituency in 2017 on an Indian National Congress ticket; he has also served on the Public Accounts Committee of the Punjab Assembly. [5]
