Popkorn (Popcorn) is a Contemporary novel by Slovenian author Andrej E. Skubic.[1] It was first published in 2006.[2][3][4]
Plot
The novel, set in Ljubljana, is about Valter Koren, a former punk and history graduate who is now a young, struggling entrepreneur. Although he lives in an elite part of the city, his business and personal life are in a downward spiral. After closing several companies, he is forced to work as a tour guide. Finding this work uninteresting, he channels his remaining energy into a bizarre project: a ghost walk tour of famous Slovenian crimes and criminals. The novel begins with a metaphorical Big Bang, comparing it to a kernel of popcorn bursting open. The story follows Valter as he meets his new neighbor, Seksa, whom he suspects is a sex worker, and invests in a new business venture. The book provides a realistic picture of Ljubljana, contrasting its idyllic and luxurious sides with its poverty and misery, as an individual tries to find their place. The novel ends without a clear resolution, leaving the reader to imagine the conclusion.[5][3]
