Phillip Ensler is an American politician and attorney who has served as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives since 2022. He represents Alabama's 74th House district. He is a member of the Democratic Party. During his time in office he secured passage of historic, bipartisan gun safety legislation, champions public education and opportunities for young people, expanded mental health services, and fights for civil and voting rights for all. He announced that he will not seek reelection in 2026 and will return to his native New York City.

Electoral history

He was elected on November 8, 2022, when he flipped a district in the 2022 Alabama House of Representatives election against Republican opponent Charlotte Meadows. He assumed office the next day on November 9, 2022 and became the only Jewish member of the legislature.

Biography

Ensler earned a Juris Doctor degree from Yeshiva University in 2017.[2] He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from George Washington University in 2012 and served in the Obama administration while in D.C..[3] He taught social studies as a Teach for America corps member at Lee High School. Ensler is Jewish.[4] He is the executive director of the Jewish Federation of Central Alabama .[5]. In 2012 he started a mentorship program to expose high school students in Alabama to college, career and cultural opportunities outside of the state. He was born and raised in NYC where he attended public schools.
