2025 helicopter crash
On 6 August 2025, the Harbin Z-9EH helicopter departed from Accra and was en route to Obuasi for an official government programme on illegal small-scale mining.[7] The helicopter lost radar contact and crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District.[8]
All eight occupants on board were killed, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, politician Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and fellow crew members Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.[9]
Aftermath
The crash was described by government officials as a "national tragedy".[10] President John Mahama declared three days of national mourning and set up a board of inquiry to investigate the cause of the accident, confirming the retrieval of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders.[11]
