Notable transfers and associations

Association with Florentino Perez

In 2004, Florentino Perez[19] was re-elected as president of Real Madrid. During his presidency, there were about a dozen transfers conducted by Tirri between the Spanish club and Italy, especially with Inter Milan.[20]

Samuel Eto'o

Peppino Tirri - Samuel Eto'o

During the summer of 2011, Tirri oversaw the transfer of Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan to FC Anzhi Makhachkala. The deal was notable in Europe for its massive worth: a fee of €22 million and salary of €10 million a year for 3 years.[18] Mining billionaire Suleyman Abusaidovich Kerimov made the Cameroonian forward the highest-paid football player in the world ahead of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.

Foreign Policy supports the hypothesis that this investment had a political purpose:

"According to Jonathan Wilson at The Guardian, the London newspaper, this is all about pleasing Vladimir Putin, who has long urged Russia's oligarchs to put their wealth into the country's struggling regions. The football club has a long history of supporting Putin".[21]
