Paulachan Kochappilly is an Indian Syro-Malabar Catholic priest, theologian, and author specialising in Moral Theology and Christian Ethics. He is a member of the religious congregation Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) and is affiliated with its Bijnor Mission. Kochappilly holds the academic rank of Professor of Moral Theology and currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru.[1][2] He is also a Professor at Christ University in Bangalore.[3]
Early life and education
Kochappilly was born on 20 January 1960 in Kalady, Kerala. He studied philosophy and theology at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, earning a B.Ph. (1983) and B.Th. (1989), and completed a BA in Hindi, Sanskrit and Philosophy from Garhwal University in 1985.[4] He pursued advanced studies at Alphonsian Academy under Pontifical Lateran University, Rome, where he obtained a Licentiate and Ph.D. in Moral Theology in 1998. His doctoral dissertation was titled Celebrative Ethics: Ecological Issues in the Light of the Syro-Malabar Qurbana.[5]
Academic career
He served as President of Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram from 2015 to 2018[6] and currently is Dean of its Faculty of Theology. He also lectures in theological ethics at Christ University, Bengaluru.[7]
Research interests
His interests include Christian ethics, ecological theology, liturgical spirituality, conscience and formation, missiology, and Indian Christian traditions. He explores the interface of Eastern liturgy—especially Syro-Malabar—and moral theology, and frequently advocates for a celebrative approach to ethics.[8][9][10]
