Nymphaea × rosea is a complex waterlily hybrid[2] of unclear identity and taxonomic status.[3][4][5][6][7] It is said to be an artificial hybrid of Nymphaea lotus, Nymphaea pubescens, and Nymphaea rubra[1] occurring in Thailand,[8] India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia,[8][9] and Indonesia.[9]

Description

Vegetative characteristics

Nymphaea × rosea is a perennial,[10] aquatic,[11] rhizomatous herb[10] with large, bronze red[12] to bronze green,[13] petiolate, 35 cm long, and 32 cm wide leaves. The petiole is pubescent.[9]

Generative characteristics

The pink to rose,[9] nocturnal,[10][9] fragrant[14] or inodorous flowers are up to 18 cm wide.[9] The androecium consists of 50–80 stamens. The gynoecium consists of 16–20 carpels. The ellipsoid seeds bear pink longitudinal ridges.[9]

Taxonomy

It was first published as Nymphaea rubra var. rosea Sims by John Sims in 1811. It was treated as a separate hybrid Nymphaea × rosea (Sims) Sweet by Robert Sweet in 1826.[1] It is an artificial hybrid of Nymphaea lotus, Nymphaea pubescens, and Nymphaea rubra.[1] Sometimes, only Sweet is credited as the taxon author.[15][8] Some sources treat it as a synonym of Nymphaea rubra Roxb. ex Andrews,[16][3][4][5] or of Nymphaea pubescens Willd.[6][7] It is placed in the subgenus Nymphaea subg. Lotos.[16]

Etymology

The hybrid name rosea means rose-coloured[17] or rose-like.[18]

Distribution

It occurs in Thailand,[8] India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia,[8][9] and Indonesia.[9]

Use

It is used in water gardens.[10][11]
