Murthal, is a village in Sonipat district of the Indian state of Haryana.[1] It is located 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) north of Sonipat, 45 km (28 mi) from the national capital New Delhi, and 202 km (126 mi) southwest of Chandigarh, the state capital. It is famous for its parathas.
Murthal, a village in the Sonipat district of Haryana, has historical ties to the Chauhan dynasty [5]of Rajput community [6]. This village was established around 1200’s thus making it one of the oldest settlements around Sonipat. The village is believed to be named after Mahendra Singh, a courtier of Prithviraj Chauhan, who was granted a jagir (land grant) in the region during the medieval period.
Demographics
As per the 2011 Indian Census, Murthal had a total population of 16,722, of which 8,920 were males and 7,802 were females. Population within the age group of 0 to 6 years was 2,221. This village has higher literacy rate compared to Haryana. In 2011, literacy rate of Murthal village was 81.62 % compared to 75.55 % of Haryana. Male literacy stands at 90.30 % while female literacy rate was 71.90 %. The Scheduled Castes population was 758. Murthal had 3974 households in 2011.[1]
Communities
According to the 1883 gazetteer of the Gurgaon District, the original inhabitants of this village are Rajput, mainly those of Chauhan clan.[7] Rajput community has historically held a prominent social and economic position. Many members of this community use Rana as a surname, reflecting a traditional title of leadership and respect. Before India's independence in 1947, the Chauhan of Murthal were known to be significant landowners in the region. The last recognized zaildar from this lineage was Manvendra Singh Rana, who was considered a key figure in the village's socio-political landscape during the late colonial period.

Since Murthal falls in between many routes, it has become notable for its highway dhabas (small restaurants) and its food delicacies.[8][9]
Transport
Regional Rapid Transport System
In December 2020, the Haryana government approved the implementation of Delhi-Panipat Corridor for its Regional Rapid Transport System. The construction will be undertaken in two stages namely, Sarai Kale Khan to Murthal depot and Murthal to Panipat.[10]
