Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara (born 10 March 1977) is an entrepreneur, an Indonesian politician, academic, and retired military officer. He has served as the Minister of Transmigration in the cabinet of President Prabowo Subianto since October 2024.[1] His professional background includes military service, academic research, business consulting, and public administration.[2]

Early life and education

Suryanagara was born in Pandeglang, Banten. He graduated from the Indonesian Military Academy (Akmil) in 1999, receiving the Adhi Makayasa award as the top cadet.[3] He later studied at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was involved in multinational military education programs.[4]

He earned a doctoral degree in political science from Padjadjaran University, Bandung.[5] His dissertation examined eclecticism in voting behavior in Indonesia, with particular attention to emotional, identity-based, and rational considerations influencing electoral choices.[6]

Military career

Suryanagara served in the Indonesian Army for approximately two decades, with assignments in both operational and staff roles. In the early 2000s, he was stationed in Aceh during the armed conflict and post-tsunami recovery period. He later participated in the Indonesian peacekeeping mission to Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and took part in international ceremonies, including Italy’s National Day parade in Rome.[7]

He also served as an instructor in an international military training program in Australia, where he worked with officers from multiple countries. He retired from the military in 2019 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.[8]

Post-military career

After leaving the military, Suryanagara was active in academic and policy circles, contributing to discussions on civil-military relations, disaster management, and governance. His articles have been published in national newspapers such as Kompas and The Jakarta Post, and he has been involved in guest lecturing and public seminars.[8]

In the private sector, Suryanagara established businesses in investment, logistics, consulting, and regional development. His work focused on improving investment access in underdeveloped regions and facilitating partnerships between public institutions and private entities.

Minister of Transmigration

Suryanagara was appointed Minister of Transmigration in October 2024.[1] During his tenure, the Ministry launched the Transmigration 5.0 framework, aimed at modernizing transmigration policy through a focus on spatial equity, rural revitalization, and infrastructure integration.

In 2025, he introduced the Transmigrasi Patriot program, designed to involve young professionals, university students, and volunteers in supporting regional development in transmigration areas. The program emphasizes participatory planning, applied research, and collaboration with local government.[9]
