Mehmet Çelik (born 1 December 2001) is a Turkish middle-distance runner who specialises in the 800 metres and 1500 metres.[1]
He is a two-time Youth Olympic and European Games bronze medalist and multiple Turkish national champion in the 800 m and 1500 m.
Career
Çelik gained his first international experience at the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival in Győr, winning gold in the 1500 metres.[2] In 2018, he was fourth in the 800 m at the European U18 Championships, and later that year, he won bronze in the 800 metres at the Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.[1][3]
Çelik continued to compete at European and Balkan junior events, reaching finals at both the U18 and U20 European Championships and at the Balkan Championships. He was a finalist at the 2019 European U20 Championships (800 m), and won bronze in the 1500 m at the 2020 Balkan Championships in Cluj-Napoca.[1]
In 2021, he won silver in the 800 m at the Balkan Championships and became Turkish champion at both 800 m and 1500 m. In 2022, he won the Balkan Indoor Championships (1500 m, Istanbul). At the 2023 European Games, he claimed bronze in the 800 metres in Chorzów.[4]
He placed fifth at the 2024 European Indoor Championships in the 1500 m, and in May 2024 won gold at the Balkan Championships in İzmir (1500 m).
