Mahathera Bodhiramsi

Phra Bodhiramsi was a senior monk and the author of the works Sihinganidāna and Cāmadevivaṃsa.

Some sources suggest that he was a native of Hariphunchai.[1] The name "Bodhiramsi" is believed to be an epithet rather than an ecclesiastical title. He is considered to have lived during the reign of King Saen Mueang Ma of Chiang Mai through to the reign of King Tilokaraj.[2]

It is believed that Phra Sakonsami invited Phra Bodhiramsi to compose the Sihingkhanithan, possibly after returning from Sri Lanka, and that Phra Bodhiramsi may have been one of the 25 monks who traveled to Sri Lanka in 1385 CE (B.E. 1928), as mentioned in the Jinakalamali.[3] He was invited to stay in Chiang Mai with the intention of composing the Chamadevivamsa as a history of the city of Hariphunchai and its kings, likely as a gesture of gratitude to his birthplace.

During the reign of King Saen Mueang Ma, Phra Bodhiramsi was already a senior monk with 20 rains retreats (vassa)—suggesting he was about 40 years old when composing the Sihingkhanithan. He is presumed to have passed away during the reign of King Tilokaraj. This is inferred from the absence of any mention of him in later periods, especially during the reign of King Mueang Kaeo of Chiang Mai, when other notable monks were acknowledged for their literary or architectural contributions, while Phra Bodhiramsi is not mentioned at all.[4]
