Magomed Khaniev (Russian: Магомед-Башир Микаилович Ханиев, born 25 April 2002) is a Russian-born Azerbaijani freestyle wrestler competing in the 70 kg weight class. He is the 2024 U23 World Champion and 2023 U23 European Champion.
Career
Khaniev was born in Troitskaya, Sunzhensky District, Ingushetia, Russia, and began wrestling at Chingiz Wrestling Club in Nazran, before moving to the Olympic Reserve School in Khasavyurt.[1]
He represented Azerbaijan at junior level, winning the 2022 Azerbaijani U21 Championship in Baku.[2] In December 2022, he claimed the Azerbaijani national title.[3]
In March 2023, Khaniev won the gold medal at the European U23 Wrestling Championships in Bucharest, defeating Armenia's Hayk Papikyan in the final.[4] In May 2023, he took bronze at the Ali Aliyev International Tournament in Kaspiysk, overcoming Khabib Zaurbekov for third place.[5]
That summer, Khaniev won the Yaşar Doğu International in Istanbul, defeating Aliabbas Rezai of Iran in the final.[6] He then took silver at the Wacław Ziolkowski Memorial in Warsaw, losing to American wrestler Douglas Zapf in the final.[7]
In January 2024, Khaniev took bronze at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the 70 kg class.[8] In October 2024, he became the U23 World Champion in Tirana, Albania.[9]
Personal life
Khaniev comes from a wrestling family. His father's name is Mikael, and he has two younger brothers, including Magomed-Tagir Khaniev, a world champion at cadet level.[10]
