Ločil bom peno od valov (I Will Separate the Foam from the Waves) is a novel by Slovenian author Feri Lainšček. It was first published in 2003.

The novel also portrays a darker side of life, showing a world where a village girl can be exploited for her body to bear a child. It explores the painful reality of a society where even a protagonist's longing can be misunderstood or misused by others.[1][2]

Plot

The novel is a three-part story set during World War I, following the rise of an infamous "gold-panning mafioso" in the city of Murska Sobota. The story is told through the eyes of his young wife, Elice, who is the true protagonist of the novel. The book delves into themes of longing, with Elice seeking a love that transcends simple desires for wealth and security. The narrative highlights the mysterious and often magical nature of Lainšček’s fictionalized Prekmurje region.[2][1]
