Content

The story centers on Lucija, a typical teenager living alone with her mother. Her alcoholic father abandoned them when she was nine, and until age twelve, she enjoyed a carefree youth. Her life changes with the arrival of her mother’s new husband, a stepfather who buys her expensive clothes and gifts from business trips, earning others’ envy, though Lucija distrusts him. Her mother soon gives birth to a daughter, Urška, raising hopes that family dynamics might improve, but this does not happen. At fourteen, Lucija’s world collapses when her stepfather rapes her. She withdraws into herself, becoming a mere shadow of the once joyful teenager. Her friends Mija and Pika wonder what is wrong, and even her admirer Nik cannot get close. Her only hope is that her mother will recognize the abuse and save her, but this does not occur; blinded by love, the mother sees Lucija as a moody teenager. One day, Lucija meets Boris, an acquaintance who opens her eyes and convinces her she is not at fault. She moves to a new town, continues her education, and soon reveals the horrific secret in a letter to her best friends Mija and Pika. The author’s first-person narrative creates a powerful emotional impact, drawing readers close to the story.[6][9][10]
