History
Larry Balestra, founder of Larry's Produce, is a fourth-generation farmer.[2] Born and raised in the Suisun Valley, Balestra learned the trade from his father, who learned from his own Italian immigrant father.[3] He furthered his study of farming by attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, majoring in Crop Sciences.[2] He met his wife there, Lisa, who was majoring in agricultural business, and the two aimed to open a roadside produce stand.[1] They opened Larry's in 1986.[1] The couple started off farming 40 acres of land with the help of one employee, expanding to 1,200 acres over time, and growing crops such as wheat, safflower, garbanzo beans, canario beans, peaches, apricots, plums, pears, sweet corn, melons, tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, eggplants, hot chiles, peppers, and other foods.[4][1][2] The farm offers an organic u-pick option as well as produce picked by the 80+ employees of the stand. Organic u-pick selections encompass peaches, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, black-eyed peas, purple hull peas, and flowers.[1]
