Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi |
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 (transl. Because Even a Mother-in-Law Was a Daughter-in-Law Once 2) is an Indian Hindi-language television series premiered on 29 July 2025 on StarPlus and streams digitally on JioHotstar.[1][2] It is a sequel and reboot of the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.[3] Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay returned to portray Tulsi and Mihir Virani.[4] Shagun Sharma, Rohit Suchanti, and Aman Gandhi portray second-generation leads.[5]
Plot
Twenty-five years later, Tulsi recalls Savita with fondness as Mihir gifts her a luxury car on their 38th anniversary. Tulsi had adopted her deceased cousin sister, Kesar's children, Angad, Paridhi, and Hrithik, and has raised them. Mihir's aunt, Gayatri, continuously berates Tulsi and questions her son, Hemant's place in the family. As Angad reaches out to Tulsi for help, she rescues him from the police station. Later, Mihir and Tulsi celebrate their anniversary, and Pari confesses her feelings to Tulsi. Mihir expresses his immense love for Tulsi during the anniversary celebration. Later, Tulsi's revelation about Pari's love interest infuriates Mihir. The police arrive to arrest Angad for drunk driving and causing an accident. Later, Gayatri questions Tulsi's parenting, prompting her to stop Mihir from getting Angad bailed. Struggling and under pressure, Nitin deletes the CCTV footage, unaware that his sister, Vrinda, finds it. Tulsi feels torn between her trust in Angad and the truth about the accident. Vrinda reveals Angad's innocence, leaving Tulsi guilt-ridden as his bail is denied. Later, Mihir urges Tulsi to meet Pari's love, hoping to ease the growing tension in the family. Tulsi pleads with Vrinda to hand over the CCTV footage to prevent Angad's life from being ruined. Heartbroken, Pari tells her family that Ranvijay has ended their relationship. Angad gets released after Sameer proves his innocence, bringing relief to the Virani family. Later, Malti slaps Vrinda as she confronts the family for accepting a bribe. Vrinda tells Hemant about the footage proving Sameer's innocence. Later, Ajay earns the Viranis' approval by respecting Pari's education, finalising their alliance. Viren deletes his sketch from Hemant's phone after overhearing him discussing it with Tulsi. Later, the Viranis bond over snacks as the men cook, sharing laughter and Joy.
Viren hits Nitin and threatens his family for giving his sketch to the Viranis. Tensions rise in the Virani house as a diamond necklace goes missing and Indira accuses Munni. As Indira accuses Munni of theft, Hrithik stuns everyone by arriving with the missing necklace and taking the blame. Later, Vrinda visits the Virani house to give Tulsi the sketch. Tulsi confronts Viren with the sketch, and he confesses to the accident but threatens her. Later, Nandini warns Tulsi about Ajay's family and advises calling off the wedding. Vrinda files a complaint against Viren but is soon chased by goons. Meanwhile, Ajay's family welcomes Noina, and Mihir is stunned to reunite with her after a long time. Mihir tells Noina how lucky he is to have Tulsi. Meanwhile, Tulsi spots Viren's intentions toward Munni, spurring her to call the police, who arrive to arrest him. Indira calls off the wedding after Viren reveals Pari's past, but Noina convinces her to reconsider. Viren threatens Nitin's family, demanding his money back. Meanwhile, Gayatri turns Pari against Tulsi, but Daksha reminds her of Tulsi's efforts. Later, Tulsi seeks Hemant's help to retrieve the pendrive of Viren's crime to stop Pari's wedding. Tulsi offers money to Malti for the pendrive with proof against Viren. As Pari and Ajay's wedding begins, the police arrest Viren for causing the accident and framing others. Seeing Ajay stand up against Viren's crime, Tulsi wholeheartedly accepts his marriage to Pari. Later, Ajay and Pari marry, and her Vidai ritual leaves the Viranis emotional. Hrithik shares his worry with Angad about Pari's peculiar behaviour, while Pari feels anxious about her married life. Later, Mihir asks Angad and Hrithik to join his office.
Later on, The Viranis and Ajay's family join Noina at her house for dinner, while Mihir is stunned to see his painting there. Later, Tulsi worries after noticing a scar on Paris hand. Ranjvijay insists that Pari meet him at least once, and she secretly complies. Elsewhere, Vrinda prepares for a job interview at an orphanage, and Mihir selects a saree for Tulsi.

Production
Development
Ekta Kapoor, the producer of the show, plans to infuse the story with a modern sensibility to resonate with the younger audience.[6] The first promo featuring Smriti Irani was released by Star Plus on 7 July 2025. She made it clear that season two would not chase TRPs but aim to impact, entertain, probe thoughts, and inspire while raising important questions, sparking conversations, and standing out in a time dominated by visual gimmicks.[7]
Sumanta Bose, Head of Cluster, Entertainment, JioStar said, "It's a show which is just not only about entertainment. It was a character who fought patriarchy, who taught how to do right parenting. So, it was so ahead of its time and the new storyline that we have embarked on creating, it's going to reshape the way India looks at content."[8]
Casting
Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay returned to reprise their roles as Tulsi Virani and Mihir Virani.[9] Hiten Tejwani and Gauri Pradhan also came back to portray Karan Virani and Nandini Virani.[10] Other returnees are Shakti Anand as Hemant Virani, Ketki Dave as Daksha Virani and Kamalika Guha Thakurta as Gayatri Virani.[11] Shagun Sharma, Rohit Suchanti and Aman Gandhi were introduced as the new generation leads who will take the story forward.[12] Tanisha Mehta was cast as Vrinda Gokhale.[13]
Reception
Ratings
The show recorded over 1.659 billion minutes of watch time across television and streaming platforms.[14] The show received 31.1 million television viewers in just four days. Out of which 15.4 million viewers had tuned in for the premiere episode alone, according to a press release by the channel.[15] The channel added, "The reboot season also witnessed 17,300 mentions across social media platforms."[16]
The latest count makes Smriti Irani-led Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 the highest-rated fiction launch across general entertainment channels in recent times and the biggest-ever GEC fiction debut across both television and digital in India, the release added.[17] According to BARC, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 recorded a 2.5 TVR on its launch day in the HSM Urban market (MF15–50 ABC demographic).[18]
Critical response
India Today noted that the first episode serves as "a nostalgic trip down memory lane, bringing back iconic characters and moments without much new development."[19]

Criticism
Some critics argued that the reboot relied too heavily on nostalgia rather than offering fresh storylines. India Today observed that while it successfully revived iconic characters, the premiere "brought little new development beyond sentimentality."[23] Mid-Day similarly noted that the show leaned on "sanskaar and kalesh" tropes without significant innovation, framing it as a sentimental but formulaic return.[24] NDTV highlighted that while Smriti Irani’s performance brought gravitas, the show risked "rehashing themes already explored two decades ago" instead of adapting to contemporary family dynamics.[25]
