History

Philip Kogan (1930–2022) was the founder of Kogan Page and a pioneer of independent business publishing[2]. A scholarship student turned physicist, he left his scientist career to challenge the book trade of the 1960s. From a single office in Gray’s Inn Road, he built Kogan Page into the UK’s leading business publisher, championing accessible, practical knowledge for professionals.

He served as Chair of the Independent Publishers Guild (1977–79), Chair of the European Business Publishing Network, and Treasurer of the Publishers Association’s Council. In recognition of his lasting impact, he received the IPG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 and became a Patron in 2017. Widely respected for his intellect, independence, and belief in meritocracy, he shaped the industry for over five decades.

Now, led by Helen Kogan as Managing Director since 2006, the publishing house has cemented itself as a thought leader in the space of business and professional development, selling into 90 countries and translation rights of its titles are sold into 50 different languages.

Prior to her current position, Helen was a journalist specialising in areas relating to human resources and management.  She is currently a trustee of Yale University Press (London), and board member of the Independent Publishers Guild (IPG) and Publishers’ Licensing Services (PLS). She has served on the Publishers Association Council [3]for six years, the Advisory Board of the London Book Fair (ten years) and the North-East London Advisory Board of Young Enterprise, a charity supporting business projects and education in schools. She was named in the Bookseller’s top 150 people in publishing 2019. She has also previously been a member of the Book Society’s Management Committee.
