Karuppur is a panchayat town in Omalur taluk of Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 31 panchayat towns in the district. Spread across an area of 12 km2 (4.6 sq mi), it had a population of 13,967 individuals as per the 2011 census.

Geography and administration

Karuppur is located in Omalur taluk of Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.[1][2] Spread across an area of 12 km2 (4.6 sq mi),[3] it is one of the 31 panchayat towns in the district.[4] The town panchayat is sub-divided into 15 wards.[1] It is headed by a chairperson, who is elected by the members, who are chosen through direct elections.[5] The town forms part of the Omalur Assembly constituency that elects its member to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and the Salem Lok Sabha constituency that elects its member to the Parliament of India.[6]

Demographics

As per the 2011 census, Karuppur had a population of 13,967 individuals across 3,707 households.[7] The population saw a marginal increase compared to the previous census in 2001 when 13,880 inhabitants were registered. The population consisted of 7,180 males and 6,787 females.[3][8] About 1,281 individuals were below the age of six years.[7] About 35.2% of the population belonged to scheduled castes. The entire population is classified as urban. The town has an average literacy rate of 73.2%.[3][7]

About 50.8% of the eligible population were employed, of which majority were involved in agriculture and allied activities.[3][7] Hinduism was the majority religion which was followed by 98.5% of the population, with Christianity (0.8%) and Islam (0.7%) being minor religions.[9]
