Joachim Grubich

Joachim Antoni Grubich (16 January 1935 – 16 August 2025) was a Polish concert organist who performed internationally and an academic teacher, head of the department of organ and harpsichord at the Academy of Music in Warsaw.

Life and career

Grubich attended the Nicolaus Copernicus Primary and Secondary School in Chełmno, and from 1956–1961 he studied at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków.[1][2] He worked at the university, starting in 1964, becoming a full-time professor at the Academy. He became professor at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he also served as the head of the department of organ and harpsichord. From 1994 to 1995, he was a visiting professor of postgraduate studies in Seoul.[2][3][4]

As a performer, he made his musical debut at the International Organ Festival in Oliwa in 1960. He performed in Europe, Asia and North America, in such halls as the Royal Festival Hall in London, De Doelen in Rotterdam, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Konzerthaus Berlin, Victoria Hall in Geneva, Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, and Strasbourg Cathedral. He also appeared in television programs in Poland, Romania and the United States. He recorded more than 25 albums. He was juror of organ competitions around the world. He participated in the reconstruction of the organ in St. Anne's Church in Warsaw,[2][5] and in the building of new instruments in Warsaw's Philharmonic Hall.[2]

In 2015, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.[6]

Grubich died on 16 August 2025, at the age of 90.[7]
