Jean-François Ravagnan is a Belgian film director, screenwriter, and assistant director. He is known for his work on both fiction and documentary films, including his directorial debut short film Renaître and his first feature-length documentary The Last Shore (La Dernière Rive).

Life and career

Ravagnan studied at the Institut des Arts de Diffusion in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Since 2007, he has worked as a first and second assistant director on numerous films, notably Lorna's Silence and The Kid with a Bike by Dardenne brothers.[1][2]

Ravagnan's directorial debut, Renaître (Rise), is a short fiction film shot between Brussels and Tunis.[3] The film was selected for the 68th Locarno Film Festival, where it was nominated for International Competition.[4][5]

His first feature-length documentary, The Last Shore, premiered in 2025 at the Visions du Réel.[6] The film explores the tragic story of Pateh Sabally, a young Gambian man who drowned in Venice's Grand Canal in 2017, and the impact of this event on his family.[7]
