Javier E. Díaz-Vera

Javier E. Díaz-Vera (born 14 May 1966, Ciudad Real, Spain) is a Spanish linguist whose research focuses on historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, and cognitive linguistics. He has contributed to studies on language change, digital humanities, and the historical expression of emotion in language.

Education and academic career

Díaz-Vera obtained both his Bachelor’s degree and PhD in English Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid. He has been affiliated with the University of Castilla-La Mancha since 1990, where he currently teaches at the Faculty of Arts.

He has participated in research stays at several international universities, including the University of Edinburgh, the University of Nottingham, the University of Canterbury, Kyoto University, Harvard University’s Villa I Tatti in Italy, and Paris 8 University Vincennes-Saint-Denis. He also holds a Jean Monnet Chair on multilingualism in the European Union.

Research

Díaz-Vera’s research focuses on the relationship between language and social context, with particular attention to the historical expression of emotions. He uses approaches from digital humanities and corpus linguistics to study linguistic variation and change. His work in historical sociolinguistics explores how linguistic forms reflect social hierarchies, cultural norms, and interpersonal interaction, as well as the effects of dialectal variation and language contact in the processes of language change.

Díaz-Vera is the founder and director of the Emotions across Time, Languages, and Cultures (EMOTLC) Research Lab at the University of Castilla-La Mancha. Since its establishment in 2003, he has led the group’s interdisciplinary work on the historical and cultural dimensions of emotion, bringing together perspectives from linguistics, history, anthropology, and psychology.

He has also contributed to research on language pedagogy and multilingualism in Europe, with a focus on applied linguistics and educational contexts.

Díaz-Vera is affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Western Australia.

Translation work

In collaboration with Teodoro Manrique-Antón, Díaz-Vera has translated several Icelandic sagas into Spanish. These include the Saga of the Orkneys,[1] Saga of the Volsungs,[2] Saga of Ragnarr Lodbrók,[3] and the Saga of the Vikings of Jóm.[4]
