Insomnio is the seventh studio album by Spanish singer Abraham Mateo, released on 5 April 2024 by Sony Music Spain. The 16-track album blends Latin pop, electronic and bachata influences. It includes collaborations with artists such as Ana Mena, Chanel, Omar Montes, Sebastián Yatra, Danny Ocean, and Rorro.[1]

Background and concept

The title Insomnio reflects the creative rhythm behind the album, shaped largely by late-night recording sessions at Mateo’s personal studio, La Nave, in Madrid, between 2023 and early 2024.[2] Mateo has described the project as a kind of musical diary, inspired by ideas that came to him during sleepless nights.[3]

Composition and style

Insomnio is rooted in Latin pop but draws from a wide range of genres, including electronic music, bachata, pop-rock, and traditional Spanish styles. The album also incorporates elements of dance music and nods to the sounds of the 1980s and 1990s, blending nostalgic references with modern production.[4][3]

“Quiero decirte,” a duet with Ana Mena, blends romantic Latin pop with soft pop-dance rhythms and funk-inspired 1980s textures, evoking a nostalgic feel that echoes the song’s theme of unresolved love.[5][6]

Songs like "Bailarina" (featuring Danny Ocean) bring a lively dance rhythm with an urban twist, while "Riendo y llorando" has a distinct '80s dance-pop feel with bright electronic beats and melodic hooks. The closing track, "El amanecer", contrasts with the rest of the album through its minimalist approach and techno-inspired electronic base.[7][8][3]

Mateo's reinterpretation of Michael Sembello's 1983 hit “Maniac”, retitled “Maníaca”, preserves the original's energetic tempo pace while adding Spanish lyrics and a modern synth-driven arrangement.[9]

The album also explores bachata and urban-pop sounds. “Clavaíto” (with Chanel) blends Caribbean rhythms with electronic beats, while “Falsos recuerdos” (with Omar Montes) mixes bachata melodies with urban textures.[10][11][12]

Ballads such as “Incomplete” and “Billete de vuelta" offer a more introspective tone, while songs like "La idea" and "XQ sigues pasando :(" (with Sebastian Yatra) incorporate pop-rock elements, featuring guitar-driven arrangements and expressive vocals. “La idea” stands out for blending punk-rock energy with heartfelt lyrics about a breakup, expressing the pain of letting go despite dreams of a shared future.[13][14]

Traditional Spanish influences are also present. The opening track, "Me acuerdo de ti", includes melodic references to Semana Santa (Holy Week) processional music, while "Desgraciaíta" (featuring Rorro) samples the classic copla "María de la O", blending flamenco influences with contemporary pop.[15][16]

Release and promotion

Insomnio was officially released on 5 April 2024 through digital platforms.[10][7][17] To celebrate the launch, Mateo hosted a themed “pajama party” in Madrid with fans, friends, and media, an event that reflected the album’s nocturnal and playful spirit.[18]

To promote the album, he embarked on the Insomnio Tour, with concerts in Spain and Latin America. Notable performances included shows at the Teatro Metropólitan in Mexico City[19] and the Teatro Opera in Buenos Aires,[20] and the Starlite Festival in Marbella.[21] Mateo also appeared as a guest performer at the final of the Benidorm Fest. where he presented a tango-inspired version of "Clavaíto", and at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024, where he performed a Spanish-language adaptation of "Maniac" live.[22]
