The Human Rights Act (French: Loi sur les droits de la personne) is an act of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories enshrining human rights in territorial law.
Provisions
The legislation contains specific accessibility requirements, but these are significantly less than the National Building Code of Canada.[1] The legislation requires employers to accommodate disabilities to the "point of undue hardship."[2] The act prohibits the publication of statements, including posts online, that will incite a group or person to discriminate and hate.[3]
The act includes protections for people with pardons for offences unrelated to a job duty in relation to a "satisfactory criminal record check" required for a job applicaiton.[4]
Implementation
The Northwest Territories Human Rights Commission exists with the goal to promote human rights and equality, defend groups and individuals from discrimination under the legislaiton.[5]
Further developments
Legislation to enshrine the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into territorial law was passed in the form of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Implementation Act.[6]
