The Human Rights Act, 2010 is an act of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly which defines human rights in provincial law.

Background

The province first passed the Human Rights Code in 1969, and renamed it to Human Rights Act in 1990.[1]

Provisions

Rights

The act requires access to education to be provided in American Sign Language, in order for it to be accessible to deaf children.[2]

The act does not contain specific rights to housing or food.[1][3]

Protected grounds

The act prohibits discrimination based on race, nationality, gender expression and gender identity.[4][5]

Included scenarios

Discrimination by a landlord towards a tenant is prohibited under the act.[4]
