Gwamna Awan General Hospital is a public secondary healthcare facility located in Kakuri, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. It is one of the oldest and most prominent hospitals in Southern Kaduna, providing essential health services to thousands of residents annually.[1]
History
The hospital was established in 1979 and named after Dr. Gwamna Awan , a respected traditional leader and advocate for public health in Northern Nigeria. Over the decades, the hospital has grown from a modest clinic into a full-fledged general hospital serving the Kakuri industrial district and surrounding communities.[2]

Challenges
In July 2025, the hospital was affected by a nationwide strike by nurses and midwives, which disrupted services and left patients stranded. Despite the challenges, medical students and senior staff stepped in to maintain critical operations.[5]

The hospital is managed by the Kaduna State Ministry of Health. As of 2025, the Acting Medical Director is Dr. Maryam Dangaru.[4]
