The Getting Ontario Connected Act, 2022 (French: Loi de 2022 pour un Ontario connecté) is an act of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario relating to the expansion of broadband.

Background

In 2020, 70% of the population of Northern Ontario received decent service, defined as a download speed of 50 megabits per second and an upload speed of 10 megabits per second, but this was largely concentrated in the five major cities.[1]

The legislation formed part of the province's plan to meet a goal of providing access to "high-speed" internet access by the end of 2025.[2]

In 2021, Ontario's "One Call" procedure for pinpointing the location of underground lines, water mains, and gas pipelines, processed 1,114,404 locate requests.[3]

Provisions

The legislation improves the One Call prcoedure was changed so that one individual will complete the entire process rather than multiple individuals for a single request.[4]

Reception

The Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario supported the legislation and described the reforms it made as "crucial".[5]
