The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is a grassroots international solidarity movement formed in 2010. It coordinates civilian-led aid missions by sea to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, delivering humanitarian supplies and protesting collective punishment through non-violent direct action.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition was formed following Israel's raid on the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla, which involved the killing of nine activists on board in international waters.[1][2] Since then, it has organized efforts aimed at raising global awareness of the humanitarian needs of Gaza and demanded unrestricted maritime access to deliver essential aid.[1][2][3] In addition, the coalition has demanded an end to the Israeli occupation and that the international community act to hold Israel accountable for its violations of human rights and international law.[2][4] Israeli authorities have regularly thwarted the coalition's attempts, seizing the cargos and detaining the passengers.
Flotillas
Over the years, the FFC has organized several flotillas involving human rights activists, medical personnel, journalists, lawyers, lawmakers, artists and trade union leaders from over 20 countries. In particular, efforts have escalated during the humanitarian crisis ensuing from the tightening of the blockade engineered by Israel during its war on Gaza (2023–ongoing), with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) having requested that Israel, among other things, allow unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid to prevent the possibility of genocide.[2] The following flotillas have been organized since the start of the war:
- 2024 Gaza Freedom Flotilla – did not set sail due to technical problems
- May 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla – did not set sail due to a drone attack
- June 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla
- July 2025 Gaza Freedom Flotilla
- Global Sumud Flotilla[5]
Previous flotillas included:
- Freedom Flotilla II (2011) – did not set sail
- Freedom Flotilla III (2015)
- Women's Boat to Gaza (2016)
