The Faculty of Military Medicine at Yerevan State Medical University is a specialized faculty in Armenia that trains medical officers for the Armed Forces of Armenia. Established in 1994, it combines medical education with military training and has produced more than 600 graduates since its founding. The faculty operates in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense of Armenia and maintains training partnerships with international institutions.
History
It was founded on 19 May 1994 under Decision No. 232 of the Government of Armenia. Its creation resulted from the merger of the existing Department of Organization and Tactics of Medical Service (OTMS) and the Department of Extreme Medicine.[1][2] Key figures from the Government of Armenia in its establishment included Defence Minister Serzh Sargsyan, Health Minister Ara Babloyan, and Minister of Higher Education Vardges Gnuni. Additionally, Colonel B. Harutyunyan, Head of the Military Medical Department within the Ministry of Defense, and Academician V. P. Hakobyan, Rector of YSMU, played significant roles in the faculty’s development.[3]
Structure and Training
The curriculum integrates standard medical education with military-specific courses. Students receive training in:
- Tactical and specialized military exercises
- Emergency medical and psychological assistance
- Military epidemiology and preventive medicine
- Burn treatment
- Radiation, chemical, and biological defense in medical contexts:contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}.
Training takes place at YSMU’s academic facilities as well as in military hospitals, field exercises, and simulation centers.[4]
Since its establishment, approximately 600 students have graduated from the faculty. The Ministry of Defense mandates military-medical education for students from other YSMU faculties, as well as for interns and clinical residents. Since 2019, cadets from Kazakhstan have also trained at the faculty under an agreement with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). Each year, the two best first-year cadets are sent to continue their studies at the Military Medical Faculty of the Hellenic Military Academy at Thessaloniki. Cadets receive practical training at the Central Clinical Military Hospital and Yerevan Garrison Hospitals. Faculty members attend advanced training sessions at the NATO Center of Excellence for Military Medicine and the S. M. Kirov Military Medical Academy.
