"Fī Sabīli al-Majd" (Arabic: في سبيل المجد, lit. 'In Pursuit of Glory') is a hymn that is used as an unofficial national anthem of Syria after the fall of the Assad regime instead of Ḥumāt ad-Diyār. The lyrics were composed by the renowned Syrian poet Omar Abu Risha.^[2]

History

This was the first national anthem, composed by Mohammed Flayfel, that was the winner of competition for choose a national anthem for Syria in 1936. But wasn't popular for people and "Humat ad-Diyar", the anthem was initially set to lose the competition, later won the competition after the anthem gained rapid popularity amongst the Syrian populace which put pressure on the competition's committee to reconsider its decisions, and eventually the anthem won and was adopted by the government as Syria's national anthem two years later, in 1938.^[3]

Following the fall of the Assad regime in 2024, Fī Sabīli al-Majd experienced a resurgence in popularity.^[2]^[4] In January 2025, the Syrian Football Association formally notified FIFA of its decision to implement a series of changes for the national team's appearances in international matches. Among these changes was the adoption of Fī Sabīli al-Majd as a temporary national anthem until a permanent resolution regarding the official anthem could be determined.^[5]

Lyrics

The anthem expresses themes of sacrifice, patriotism, and resistance against oppression:
