Dr. Mehta's Hospitals is a privately owned, multispecialty, and tertiary care facility in India, with campuses in Chetpet and Velappanchavadi.
History
The hospital was first opened in 1933 by Dr. Anantrai Jayantilal Mehta, also known as A.J. Mehta, as a small clinic and nursing home.[1]
In 1955, the facility relocated to Chetpet, evolving into a multispecialty surgical and birthing unit with one delivery room and two convalescence rooms. In 1977, his daughter, Dr. Usha Shukla, joined the practice. In the 1990s, their son, Dr. Dilip Mehta, took over the administration, leading its transition into a tertiary care institution. During this period, the hospital received NABH accreditation and became an NBE-recognized teaching hospital.
Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals Private Limited was officially incorporated on 4 October 1994. Today, Sameer Mehta serves as Chairman, Dr. Pranav Mehta as Director, and Mr. Dilip Mehta as Emeritus Chairman. The institution has since expanded its clinical footprint across Chennai, through its two campuses.
Expansion
In 2014, the hospital announced plans for a new multi-acre campus near Thiruverkadu.[2] Four years later, in 2018, the Velappanchavadi campus (also known as the Global Campus) was inaugurated on 5.5 acres, with 220 operational beds, and the intention of scaling up to 1,000 beds.[3] According to Chairman, Sameer Mehta, the campus includes emergency care, critical care units, and outpatient services.
Education
The hospital is an NBE-accredited teaching institution with more than 100 full-time resident trainees and over 250 alumni. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, post-doctoral fellowship, and HSSC certification programs.
Research
The hospitals have published over 80 indexed papers, both national and international, between 2020 and 2024, in neonatology, pediatric nephrology, and obstetrics.
