Somphong's puffer, redeye puffer or crested puffer (Carinotetraodon lorteti) is a small freshwater blowfish found in mainlands Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. The species can also be found in the aquarium trade.
This species is often found in canals and brackish waters along the coast of Southeast Asia. In Thailand, for instance, it is commonly found hiding in dense water hyacinths in the canals of Thonburi, Bangkok. However, it remains a rare species. The male has a ruby-red body and red eyes, and is significantly larger than the female. When fully matured, it grows to about 3 in (about 7 cm) in length.[2]
Its common name, including a specific name that was once used, honours Thai fish explorer and aquarium trader Somphong Lek-aree. He discovered three new freshwater fish specie, namely the dwarf loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki), Poropuntius melanogrammus (formery Puntius somphongsi), and Somphong's rasbora (Trigonostigma somphongsi).[3]
