Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is an upcoming first-person shooter game co-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software and published by Activision. It is the twenty-second installment of the Call of Duty series and is the eighth main entry in the Black Ops sub-series, following Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024). Set in 2035, Black Ops 7's story—playable in single-player or co-op—will follow a team of agents led by David Mason in the aftermath of Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012). As with previous Call of Duty titles, the game will also include a multiplayer component and the cooperative round-based Zombies mode.
Development on Black Ops 7 took place concurrently with the production of Black Ops 6, with both titles being green-lit at the same time. Marketing for the title began in June 2025 with the release of a cinematic teaser trailer during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase; a full reveal debuted on August 19, at Gamescom. Black Ops 7 is scheduled for release on November 14, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Gameplay
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7—like its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024)—will be a first-person shooter.[1] Depending on the game mode selected, players use near-future military equipment, such as weapons, "field upgrades", and "scorestreaks" to combat AI opponents, other human players, or undead creatures.[2] Players can traverse a level/map omnidirectionally, and can perform "wall jumps" off of select walls;[3] in a change from Black Ops 6, the "Tactical Sprint" movement option—a limited-duration boost of speed allowing faster movement than the standard sprint—has been removed from the core movement, but is accessible as an optional in-game perk.[2]
Black Ops 7 features three primary game modes: a single-player/co-op campaign, a multiplayer component and the cooperative round-based Zombies mode.[3] Playable with up to four players, the campaign sees players take control of a JSOC unit led by David "Section" Mason.[2] The campaign features 11 total missions;[4] completing all missions unlocks access to the "Endgame" activity, which puts up to 32 players in the city of Avalon and tasks them with completing a series of objectives within a strict time limit. Players can bring a customized loadout with them into Endgame, but if they die, they lose access to their gear.[5] In addition, for the first time in the franchise, the campaign features shared progression with the multiplayer and Zombies modes, allowing players to gain experience points (XP) and level up their global ranks, weapons, and seasonal battle passes.[2]
The multiplayer component puts, in most cases, two teams of six (6v6) against each other across 16 maps; the objective-based "Skirmish" mode allows for 20v20 combat on two dedicated maps.[3] Players have access to 30 customizable loadout weapons; starting with the first post-launch season, players will also be able to "carry forward" weapons from Black Ops 6.[2] New to Black Ops 7's multiplayer is the "Overclock" upgrade system, which grants additional abilities to a player's selection of lethal and tactical equipment, scorestreaks, and field upgrades.[3] In Zombies, one to four players fight endless hordes of the undead across a large-scale map, which can be traversed using a "Wonder Vehicle"; the mode will also include a selection of smaller-scale "Survival Maps" and a new iteration of the top-down "Dead Ops Arcade" game mode.[6]
Premise
Campaign
Set in 2035—ten years after the events of Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012)—Black Ops 7's campaign will follow JSOC Commander David "Section" Mason (Milo Ventimiglia) and his team of agents, codenamed "Specter One", as they investigate the apparent return of deceased Nicaraguan terrorist Raul Menendez and his threat to "burn the world" in three days.[2] Working alongside David in Specter One are operatives Mike Harper (Michael Rooker), Eric Samuels (John Eric Bentley), and Leilani "50/50" Tupuola (Frankie Adams), as well as Colonel Troy Marshall (Y'lan Noel), who oversees JSOC's Tier 1 operations. Also involved in the investigation of Menendez is "The Guild", a former criminal organization turned technology corporation led by its CEO, Emma Kagan (Kiernan Shipka).[2][7]
Zombies
Following the events of Black Ops 6, the Requiem crew—Grigori Weaver, Elizabeth Grey, Mackenzie Carver, and Maya Aguinaldo—have been teleported to the "Dark Aether" dimension, where they encounter alternate incarnations of Edward Richtofen, "Tank" Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki. Both crews form an alliance to battle against a new threat.[2]
Development
Black Ops 7 is being co-developed by Treyarch and Raven Software;[1] production on the title took place concurrently with the one for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024), with both titles being green-lit at the same time. Lead narrative producer Natalie Pohorski explained that this approach allowed Treyarch and Raven to more directly build on the foundation set by Black Ops 6 with Black Ops 7.[8] Initial details surrounding the game began to surface in late 2023, when Insider Gaming reported that the 2025 Call of Duty installment would act as a follow-up to Black Ops II set in the aftermath of the death of that title's main antagonist, Raul Menendez.[9][10] Further details about Black Ops 7, including the 2035 setting, the co-op campaign, and the Zombies mode, were shared in April 2025 by an individual who reportedly attended a study group test meeting for the game.[11]
Marketing
Activision and Microsoft released a cinematic trailer for Black Ops 7 during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase event on June 8, and revealed the game's title and story premise;[12][1] On the same day, Variety shared initial details about the game's cast, including Milo Ventimiglia's casting as David Mason and Kiernan Shipka's casting as Emma Kagan—the CEO of "The Guild"; Michael Rooker is also set to reprise his role as Mike Harper, a supporting character from Black Ops II.[13] Later in the same month, a teaser was uploaded to the "Cordis Die" YouTube channel, which was used in 2012 to promote Black Ops II.[14] In August, Activision unveiled several live-action teaser trailers featuring the Guild, as well as a viral website for the company. In addition, sponsored articles covering the Guild were published by Forbes and Wired.[15][16]
The first full reveal for the title took place on August 19, at Gamescom,[17] where developers from Treyarch and Raven shared details on the game's premise and new gameplay features;[3] a 17-minute "Direct" presentation was also released alongside the reveal, which included further details on the campaign and multiplayer component.[18] A full reveal for the Zombies mode is set to debut in early September; an extended look at the multiplayer component will be featured at the 2025 Call of Duty: Next showcase event on September 30.[19]
Release
Black Ops 7 is scheduled for release on November 14, 2025,[20] for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.[1] It will be made available to subscribers of select Xbox Game Pass plans on release day, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.[21] Those who pre-order Black Ops 7 or have an active subscription to Xbox Game Pass will receive early access to an open beta test for the game's multiplayer component, which is set to run from October 2 to October 8.[22]
